Ranch grass-fed vs US grocery beef

USDA ERS publishes monthly BLS retail averages for commodity grocery beef. Those figures are not grass-fed. We show them so readers can see the mail-order grass-fed premium against the national grocery baseline (September 2026, fetched 2026-11-03 from the ERS meat price spreads file).

Grass-fed ranches vs grain-finished and Wagyu

Two shops on our tracker are useful as grain-finished / steakhouse benchmarks, not as grass-fed peers. Snake River Farms says its beef is pasture-raised and grain-finished (American Wagyu). Allen Brothers sells USDA Prime, Choice and Wagyu steaks. Grass-finished ranch prices sit beside them below.

Methodology

Once a day we fetch each tracked shop’s public product feed, match titles to cuts, divide listed pack price by listed weight, and drop listings whose weight or $/lb fails our bounds. “Grass-fed” and “grass-finished” come from the shop’s own wording (or a ranch-confirmed beefFeed flag). Shipping, tax, subscribe-and-save and coupons are excluded. Middle listing = lower-middle real offer when sorted by $/lb. Mean = arithmetic average of listing $/lb (shown as USD/lb). USDA grocery figures are monthly BLS retail averages via ERS, not grass-fed. Full detail: how we compare prices. History since Oct 24, 2026 (12 days).

Left out of this page because we do not track them cleanly yet: free-shipping thresholds, subscription vs one-off cart pricing, and store-level promo codes.

Questions

How much does grass-fed beef cost per pound right now?

As of Nov 4, 2026, across 805 in-stock beef listings at 31 US ranches, the middle listing was $21.43/lb. Grass-fed ground beef’s middle listing was $13.95/lb (cheapest $7.25/lb at Joyce Farms). Ribeye’s middle listing was $49.00/lb. Shipping and tax are extra.

How do ranch grass-fed prices compare with grocery-store beef?

USDA ERS publishes monthly BLS retail averages. For September 2026, grocery ground beef averaged 6.79 USD/lb and all uncooked beef steaks averaged 12.69 USD/lb (source: https://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/meat-price-spreads). Our figures are mail-order ranch listings with grass-fed or grass-finished claims, normalized to $/lb from pack price and listed weight. They are not the same product as supermarket commodity beef, so the gap is a price comparison, not a like-for-like quality match.

Is Snake River Farms or Allen Brothers grass-fed?

No. Snake River Farms states its beef is pasture-raised and grain-finished (American Wagyu and USDA Prime lines). Allen Brothers sells USDA Prime, Choice and Wagyu steaks as a steakhouse supplier; it is not a grass-fed ranch brand. We include them on the tracker so shoppers can see grain-finished and Wagyu prices next to grass-fed ranch prices, and we label them as such.

Can I cite these grass-fed beef price statistics?

Yes. Cite GrassFedPrices.com, link to https://grassfedprices.com/grass-fed-beef-price-statistics, and keep the as-of date (Nov 4, 2026). A suggested citation sits on this page. The daily price index and CSV live at https://grassfedprices.com/grass-fed-beef-price-index.

How often are these statistics updated?

We re-read each tracked shop’s public product listings about once a day. This page regenerates from that same dataset. Tracking started Oct 24, 2026 (12 calendar days through Nov 4, 2026).
