SRF grades: Silver, Black, Gold and Gold Plus
Snake River Farms says its beef grades start at USDA Prime and that it grades its American Wagyu on a 12-point Beef Marbling Score (BMS) that goes past the USDA scale (Wagyu FAQ, Oct 29, 2026):
| Grade | Marbling score | What SRF says |
|---|---|---|
| SRF Silver | BMS 4–5 | marbling comparable to USDA Prime |
| SRF Black | BMS 6–8 | significantly more marbling than USDA Prime |
| SRF Gold | BMS 9–10 | dramatically more marbling than USDA Prime |
| SRF Gold Plus | BMS 11–12 | the highest marbling SRF sells |
SRF describes its American Wagyu as a cross of 100% Japanese Wagyu with high-quality American cattle, 50% Wagyu with verified Japanese genetics. It is not fullblood Wagyu.
Is Snake River Farms grass-fed?
No. Snake River Farms’ own answer is “Our beef is pasture-raised and grain-finished” (quarter beef FAQ, Oct 29, 2026). In its animal well-being article (read Oct 29, 2026), Snake River Farms says its cattle graze grass on Northwest ranches until they weigh about 450 to 700 pounds, then eat a carefully monitored ration of locally sourced forages, grains, potato byproducts and its PerforMix mineral supplement for the rest of a roughly 500-day lifecycle. Its Wagyu FAQ cites over 450 days of grain finishing as the reason the beef costs more. It says it uses no growth-promoting hormones and processes at its own facility in Toppenish, Washington.
If you want grass-finished beef instead, it costs from $8.49/lb for ground beef (Thousand Hills Lifetime Grazed) and from $26.46/lb for ribeye (US Wellness Meats, middle $48.99/lb) on Nov 4, 2026. See grass-finished beef prices and grass-fed vs grass-finished.
