Is ButcherBox worth it?
The price per pound, checked.
ButcherBox is a meat subscription: you pick a box size and cuts, it ships free every 2–8 weeks. Here is what it costs per pound, worked out from ButcherBox’s own public prices (Oct 26, 2026), next to grass-fed beef from 33 US ranches we track daily. No star ratings, no made-up reviews.
ButcherBox prices and plans
| Plan | Proteins | Up to | Price per box | Per lb at full weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signature Medium | 6 | 21 lb | $179.00 | $8.52/lb |
| Signature Large | 9 | 31 lb | $249.00 | $8.03/lb |
| Signature Extra-Large | 12 | 42 lb | $319.00 | $7.60/lb |
| Essentials Medium | 6 | 21 lb | $159.00 | $7.57/lb |
“Up to” is ButcherBox’s maximum; a box of steaks and salmon weighs less than a box of ground beef and whole chicken, so your real price per pound is higher than the last column. ButcherBox’s homepage quotes $8.52–$15.23/lb for the Signature Medium (pricing effective 1/8/2026). The Signature plan includes specialty cuts like ribeye, filet and salmon; Essentials is limited to its 50+ core cuts. Shipping is free and boxes ship within 1–3 days. ButcherBox: how it works.
What’s in a ButcherBox box?
Subscription boxes are built from the cuts you pick. ButcherBox’s fixed one-time Essentials Box ($169.00) shows a typical mix:
| Item | Weight |
|---|---|
| Ground beef 85/15 (100% grass-fed) | 2 lb |
| Bacon | 10 oz |
| Chicken breasts | 3 lb |
| Filet mignons, 2 × 6 oz (100% grass-fed) | 12 oz |
| Sirloin tips (100% grass-fed) | 1 lb |
| Sockeye salmon | 2 lb |
| Italian chicken sausage | 1 lb |
Only 3.75 lb of the 10.38 lb is beef; the rest is chicken, pork and salmon. See the Essentials Box on ButcherBox.
Where the beef comes from
Per ButcherBox’s FAQ (Oct 26, 2026), its 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef comes from Australia (born, raised and harvested there; cut and packed in the US), and it also sells pasture-raised, grain-finished beef from the US. ButcherBox is a certified B Corp and says its meat has no antibiotics or added hormones. The ranches below are US ranches selling their own beef; whether a listing says “grass-finished” is the ranch’s own wording, shown in our tables.
ButcherBox vs buying from ranches, per lb
ButcherBox doesn’t publish per-cut prices outside its member area, so we can’t compare cut for cut. Here’s what the same cuts cost from US ranches that ship, in our data on Nov 4, 2026, against the ButcherBox box range above ($7.60–$8.52/lb at full weight, mixed proteins):
| Cut | Cheapest ranch | Middle listing | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground beef | $7.25/lbJoyce Farms | $13.95/lb | 108 |
| Sirloin | $19.00/lbTexas Grassfed Beef | $34.98/lb | 52 |
| Filet mignon | $39.96/lbAllen Brothers | $82.71/lb | 54 |
| New York strip | $22.98/lbSnake River Farms | $47.11/lb | 55 |
| Ribeye | $26.46/lbUS Wellness Meats | $49.00/lb | 78 |
| Chuck roast | $14.08/lbUS Wellness Meats | $17.20/lb | 22 |
Read it this way: a ButcherBox price per pound blends cheap chicken and ground beef with steaks and seafood, while each row here is one cut. If you mostly eat ground beef or want one specific steak, compare that cut directly; if you want a little of everything delivered on a schedule without choosing ranches, a box is simpler. Ranch prices exclude shipping, which many ranches charge under a minimum order.

Questions
Is ButcherBox worth it?
It depends on what you want. ButcherBox is convenient: a mixed box of beef, chicken, pork and seafood with free shipping, delivered every 2–8 weeks, and you can pause or cancel any time (per ButcherBox, Oct 26, 2026). At full box weight it works out to $7.60–$8.52/lb, which is low, but that assumes the maximum weight and blends in chicken and pork. If you want only grass-fed beef from a named US ranch, or a specific cut, buying direct lets you compare per pound (grass-fed ground beef from $7.25/lb, middle listing $13.95/lb in our data on Nov 4, 2026), though ranches usually charge shipping under a minimum order.
How much does ButcherBox cost?
On Oct 26, 2026, ButcherBox listed the Signature plan at $179 (Medium: 6 proteins, up to 21 lb), $249 (Large: 9 proteins, up to 31 lb) and $319 (Extra-Large: 12 proteins, up to 42 lb), and the Essentials plan at $159 (Medium: 6 proteins, up to 21 lb). Shipping is free. New-member offers change often.
How much is ButcherBox per pound?
At the full “up to” weight, the Signature boxes work out to $8.52/lb (Medium) down to $7.60/lb (Extra-Large). That is a best case: you only reach the maximum weight with heavier, cheaper cuts. ButcherBox’s own homepage puts the Signature Medium at $8.52–$15.23/lb (pricing effective 1/8/2026). Its one-time Essentials Box ($169) lists 10.38 lb of mixed proteins, or $16.29/lb.
Is ButcherBox beef grass-fed?
ButcherBox offers two kinds of beef: 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef from Australia (born, raised and harvested there, cut and packed in the US), and pasture-raised, grain-finished beef from the US. Check which one a cut is before you add it.
What are the best ButcherBox alternatives?
If you want US grass-fed beef bought direct from the ranch, the cheapest ranches overall in our data on Nov 4, 2026 were Joyce Farms, Home Place Pastures, Good Ranchers, compared cut for cut. Our price pages show which ranch is cheapest for the exact cut you want.
Can you cancel ButcherBox?
Yes. ButcherBox’s FAQ says you can pause or cancel any time with no fees; an order that has already been processed still ships and is charged.
Do you earn money from ButcherBox?
Not today. We’ve applied to ButcherBox’s affiliate program but it isn’t active, so ButcherBox links here are plain links. We don’t publish star ratings or user reviews, only prices we can check.
