ButcherBox vs Crowd Cow
A mixed box versus priced-by-the-cut farms.

Short answer: It depends what the box contains. ButcherBox Signature Medium is $179 for up to 21 lb, or $8.52/lb only if it hits that weight, and the box mixes chicken and pork (Nov 8, 2026). Crowd Cow’s Little Belt ground beef was $11.69/lb the same day.

ButcherBox and Crowd Cow are not the same kind of store, and neither is one grass-fed ranch. ButcherBox sells a subscription box. Crowd Cow sells individual cuts from named farms. Figures below are from their public pages on Nov 8, 2026. Ranch prices are from our own feed, last checked Nov 8, 2026.

ButcherBox Signature boxes

From the ButcherBox FAQ (Nov 8, 2026): Medium $179, Large $249, Extra-Large $319. The “up to” weight is their maximum. The per-pound figure is that price divided by the maximum, so it is a best case, and it blends beef with chicken, pork and seafood. Their how it works page says shipping is free. You can pause or cancel. The FAQ also says 100% grass-fed beef is grass-finished, and that they also sell US grain-finished beef. We did not re-check the Essentials plan price on Nov 8, 2026.

Crowd Cow example cuts

Crowd Cow has no single box price. These are product pages we opened on Nov 8, 2026. Little Belt’s ground-beef page says the cattle are raised on pasture and supplemented with grain, so this is not a grass-finished claim. The FAQ says standard shipping is free at $149 and $19.99 below that. Priority shipping is an extra $39.99.

Against ranch ground beef and ribeye

On Nov 8, 2026, in-stock ground beef from ranches we track ran from $7.25/lb (Joyce Farms) to $25.00/lb, middle listing $13.98/lb. Ribeye titles of every kind ran from $22.97/lb to $136.00/lb, middle $49.99/lb. That ribeye span includes Wagyu and dry-aged titles; the ribeye page separates them. Those ranch prices exclude shipping. Crowd Cow’s cowboy ribeye was $47.98/lb on Nov 8, 2026, for one pasture-raised steak, not a grass-finished claim.
